Flowers In Gun Barrels - Discography

Kind of a late and no brainer in terms of posting this on here. I should have when the gettin' was good, but still relevant in 2012. Plastic Smile Records had their discography with all their hits on 'em, but sadly that is now unavailable, I think. Still, the split with xiwswuysbx... is still available for the taking, so take it! Considering they had some of their stuff released on PSR, and they had a split with xiwswuysbx, you can kind of assume what they sound like: skrammy skramtacular skram. It's not violent, in that it's not very aggressive sounding, but it's really fast and light, airy, kind of like a blender. Chrispy guitars, airy atmosphere, screamy vocals on the verge of screechy, and some of dat emo. The Finest.

Brain Fever - Brain Fever

Female fronted weird and mathy hm, screamo? I don't know or think that's the best way to describe Brain Fever, but it's close and good enough for now. To me it sounds like a non-synthy VSS discovered a female singer, at least a little bit. Ripping bass sound and magical background growling, or howling or whatever it may be. The instruments sound very good, it gets very Orchid at times, but I suppose music like this is supposed to get very Orchid at times. This is a chunky sounding release, which most of the time I don't like, but since I really like the rhythm section in this mathy band it works really well. What more is there to say... well, it sounds like they're having a good time with their sound which I like, it's very loose and tight knit at the same time, chaotic organization. It's funny to say, but if I were describe this band using other bands I would probably (and am going to) drop Shroomunion, The VSS, The Blood Brothers, and The Avenging Disco Godfathers of Soul (I'm such a piece of shit for comparing this band to others).

Pilot Episode - Demo

Pilot Episode are pretty good, and now you realize that today is another day that I do not want to write anything about anything. I suppose you can call this more hardcore than skrammy, if that even makes sense. I feel like this is a band you can show your girlfriend to sorta stray her away from A Day To Remember and probably even Thursday, but there's nothing wrong with being a girl and there is nothing wrong with being a guy and listening to both ADTR and Thursday, there is probably nothing wrong with anything. That Meet me Outside track gets a little freaky at first, I dig that a lot, same with 3 at 54 seconds in. The guitars are good, the vocals are good, the bass and drums are pretty melodic, but it all follows through to being urgent sounding and ultimately, what the poets call, very emo. The band rules.

MOTHS - MOTHS

MOTHS are from Texas, and are on their West Coast tour currently (please help them out since some of their equipment was just stolen a day or so ago), hitting up what are considered local places for me. Their bandcamp has their s/t full length album, which I'm sure a lot of you will enjoy. It's not uber chaotic, but has some extremely nice textures and atmospheric guitars sprawled all throughout it. I definitely hate post rock infiltrating screamo, but this isn't so overbearing and overdone. The only track that's long is the last track, and it's not really that bad, especially as a closer, when I suppose one should expect something really brooding and almost romantic sounding. Chaotically inclined post rock. It's not the most perfect album, but that in fact gives it the ingenuity that we need in this type of scene. Less perfection, more destruction which will lead to building something a little new, or at least fresh, from worn out parts. I like it. Get it. HELP THEM OUT. I'll be seeing them (hopefully) twice this week.

*Also if you haven't noticed, in order to give the bands more attention somehow, I've been trying to link their facebook profiles near the download on my posts. Usually, or if the band thinks it's a good idea, and sometimes it is and isn't, a band will post where to buy their stuff or shows or whatever. The best deal is info on contacting them.

SWELLS - Illuminated Levels

If you haven't noticed, I probably will only ever post bandcamp links on here from now on... maybe. I just am not feeling uploading shit lately, it's not like it matters, there are a zillion other blogs with similar content on them.

Nice cover art. Chaotic screamo, simply put. The guitars are doing their own thing, which I really like. Released the last day of last year, so technically I guess this is a 2011 release, but it's the second screamo release of 2012 that I am totally into (the first being For Want Of's new one). I'm not in the mood to write reviews right now. I'm not in the mood for anything, but this is good. I swear, just give it a try. Listen to track four, it's got Spanish lyrics.

Also, I guess in the big picture it doesn't matter, but this shit redirects on last.fm. Vote it into reality.

* Holy shit I just realized that some of the other lyrics are in Spanish as well, at least I think. Maybe they're just in Spanish on bandcamp.

Skvlt - Demo

Skvlt are pretty noisy and chaotic, blistering and sweltering sounds. Very groovy. Black metal inspired hardcore punk, similar to the rest of the stuff that I have been posting lately. Really good stuff, so good that I cannot describe it. The download link on this site is not the download link at all, it's a link to the download link on their blogspot so you can check out other stuff they have done, links to other bands, PRGNT records. I don't know, they haven't updated it in like a month maybe? I think? Or maybe they just updated it very recently, I don't care, but they're a good band.

Life of Refusal - Life of Refusal 2011

Another band from my neck of the woods, very aggressive as well. Total chaotic powerviolence/fastcore/hardcore, whatever. It is what it is, and it will be that way every time you listen. Pretty good band live, the singer got really into it, I got really into it. I think I developed a crush on him. Regardless of the sexual ambiguity of this, do not be scared and listen. No songs about falling in love, which is a bummer, but there are some neat sing a long type of songs, stuff about giving into the business world, being an awful person, and kind of just rejection of typical outlooks on life. If you like this type of stuff you will dig it, if you don't then you won't, but isn't that how it always is?

Cynarae - Cynarae

Another really great band from the West Coast, not from California though (the Pacific Northwest in fact), but hopefully they do not stay strangers and visit back. The description on their facebook page says, that they are a "Super leftist, atheistic, forward thinking, semi nihilistic, 90's metallic, hardcore hate violence," which isn't off at all. This band played and said some rad stuff, I felt totally comfortable with their aggression, which was great. They didn't put off anything mean or hateful, aside from aggressive music. Frustrated Bremen type of hardcore similar to stuff like Systral, maybe even like Zeroid, but just a little bit. I also hear a little Reversal of Man in the music, but who knows?

Beezlebup - Demo

The imagery of the bandcamp download is pretty spot on. Not sure how the tape looks or if it is even out yet*, when I saw them I didn't really look because I ran out of money paying for all my friends to get in the show. Really hardcore, fast stuff. Queuing the same "VIBES" of most of the stuff I have been posting recently: angry, pathetic, to the point, noisy, aggressive, worthless. All the good stuff rolled up into one. I hope their demo tape has more stuff on it, because these two songs are really good and I'd like to sink my teeth into more. Again, this stuff is dark and ultimately defeating rather than run of the mill dumb midwest girlfriend lyrics, not to be harsh.

*Fuck, just checked that the show I went to was their tape release show. I feel like such a shit head for passing out on their tape, hopefully I catch them again soon though.

Hordes - Abaragnosis

Hordes is a nice band from my neck of the woods. Four dudes that make hardcore music, nothing brutal, but it is particularly heavy and noisy when witnessed live. Grunty vocals, and doom tuned guitars playing hardcore in a dark way. I'm kind of glad bands like this exist, I really do not like that happy popular shit that's easy on the ears and particularly dominating places like tumblr or Alternative Press. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say without sounding a bit pretentious, but considering my last few posts have had me saying some kind of mean things, I can continue. This shit is not ear plug, cut off jean shorts, bright colored beanie hardcore, this is influenced by the dark side of the music. Crust, Japanese, late 80's, mild beatdown, guttural vocals, and mosh.

Gay Kiss - Anxiety Machine

Not a homosexual cover band that does Kiss songs, but that would work as well. Very hardcore, very fun. Not fun like dumb ass fun, but fun as in headache, clogged arteries, and smashing guitars type of fun. I saw this band last night, the singer was crawling all over the floor, looking mighty miserable, as the rest of the band played fast and a tad bit sensual. From Arizona.

Ruptures - D e a d b l o o m

Ruptures are from Southeren California and they played my backyard. While their output has been good, this EP saw them take away a lot of their melodic edge, and while the music is still groovy it has a sneakier chaotic edge to it. I dig this EP more than their earlier stuff because of that chaotic feel it entails. It could be a product that comes from their evolution of being a four piece to now a three piece. The band went from melodic post-hardcore to a little more rawer of a sound, dipping into almost indie dance music at times (The Red Light Sting comes to mind), and it works. Catch the band live, very fun.
